As its name implies this insect is most often a pest of stored tobacco products. This cosmopolitan pest can also attack a wide range of other stored products. The adult beetle is between 2.0-3.7mm in length, reddish brown colour with its head retracted under the front of the body. The larvae are pearly white and elongated. Both adults and larvae cause damage. Infestations can build up very quickly given ideal conditions with one breeding pair capable of producing 2000 offspring over 4 months.
